Review by Sarah for Hagen Habitrail OVO Dwarf Hamster or Mouse Habitat – 62612

I bought two of these suites (one each for my dwarf Robo hamsters) and am pleased. I couldn’t get a wire cage because my 4 cats would be able to reach their claws between the bars and could potentially hurt a hamster, so I decided plastic would be much safer. The plastic pieces are sturdy and I especially like the ingenious lock connectors. I can easily move the units without any pieces falling off. I originally put the Robos in a homemade cage made from a huge storage bin to give them more floor space, but they were scared and didn’t move around much, choosing instead to hunker down into the one piece of Habitrail (the den) that I left in the bin. So after a couple weeks, I decided to move them back into the Habitrail Ovo Suites. I placed the tubes horizontally since they have trouble climbing vertically (even with the dwarf-sized tubes). They are timid by nature and seem to enjoy all the tunnels and small spaces they can find and hide in. The only drawback is that I would like them to have more running room but they really don’t like “wide open spaces” as some hamsters do and would rather crawl through tunnels and hide out in several strategically placed dens. Here are my pros and cons:
Pros: designed for dwarf hamsters, cat/dog proof, sturdy, nice to look at, easy to take apart, lots of tunnels and add-on pieces for hamsters to enjoy, easily attaches to other (non-Habitrail) brand cages and accessories
Cons: expense, big slots in running wheel could injure small hamsters, water bottle will leak if moved, some hamsters may find it hard to climb the slippery stairs to reach the food bowl, there’s less airflow inside than a wire cage
